When we read this verse in 2 Corinthians, it is typically thought about in terms of money, finances, giving to others in need. And this is accurate! Paul makes powerful statements in this verse, this letter to the church in Galatia. Most of the time we look at this verse in terms of our spiritual walk with Christ, in understanding we are not perfect, we are not where we were, yet we are not where we want to be. This verse is filled with encouragement to keep “straining toward what is ahead.” But, I challenge you to take a deeper look at the verse and see how it applies to marriage.

Seminars, classes, conferences, and webinars are crucial in your marriage for numerous reasons. Events like these help you prioritize your spouse and marriage. They give so many good things to think about and apply to your own life. Lessons learned in these events can help you dig a little deeper into any issues you may have.

This verse in Galatians packs quite a number of attributes. Nine of them! As Christians we are called to live by the spirit and it will become evident because we will bear the fruit. This fruit, mentioned in Galatians. Notice it does not say “fruits,” but rather “fruit.” I think of it as one orange with nine segments inside. Let's explore these segments and put the marriage spin on it.

TRUST…that is a hard pill to swallow, especially if you’ve experienced broken trust. I think all of us have in some way. Let’s tackle this together. We trust our instincts. We trust the chair will hold us up. We trust our children to tell us the truth. We trust our spouse to love us “til death do us part.” Trust is a necessity in order for a marriage to be strong and good. It has been said that trust is lost in buckets but gained in drops.

When I saw the tree I thought of how it represents us. The tree is naturally covered with bark, which is the protective layer. The bark protects the tree from disease and pests. It is a necessary part for the tree’s survival. We are like this tree in that we cover ourselves with a protective layer. For the tree, it is a good thing. For us, not so good.

This verse packs a big punch of how we should treat one another in love, in our marriage. When I dig deeper into this verse I notice a list of positive attributes, as well as negative attributes. Then I think about how these attributes relate to each other and what it means for our relationship, how we relate to our spouse.

The scar is a reminder of what happened. And that is not always a good thing because those memories may bring out negative emotions.

Does your heart feel like the scorched, scarred, barren land? Do you feel dry and crusty? Broken? Tired? Useless? If only you could rise above it as if on a plane to get a birds eye view of what God sees, what only He can do…hmmm. You would see His Master Plan for your life. God sees the finished masterpiece of you in its entirety. Do you find that comforting.

We all crave connection with people. Our family, friends, coworkers. We want to be seen by them, recognized in a unique way. Known for what we have done, are doing, and dream to do. But in the business of daily life we can feel forgotten, we don’t matter, we are not enough. And that hurts. That’s a lonely place to live in but it’s reality for so many.
